The Company was set up to provide a payment solution for markets previously restricted by fixed landline communication. The Company’s mobile range of transaction terminals, including a point of sale (POS) device that doubles as a fully functional mobile phone, complemented by a range of value-added-services and software applications provides previously un-serviced markets with compelling payment solutions.
The development of a mobile banking service has also opened up the possibility of bringing the bank to the “unbanked” in Africa and other emerging markets. The Company is currently deploying mobile payment terminals to carry the Company’s software known and branded Paystream.
The unit has been designed with unmatched computing power and an ultra-fast printer to create a high performance and user-friendly terminal. The technology used means it is adaptable to all national and international security regulations and the communication capacity of the terminal allows for banking authorisation in just a few seconds. The GPRS system means the terminal is always online when switched on - in addition, the terminal is future ready, engineered to adapt to changes in payment, with a large memory capacity and an optional SD Card or MMC reader.
Paystream software is terminal agnostic. The Company is therefore free to switch to other terminals and/or providers if better units or better prices become available.
Paystream applications include credit and debit card payment, money transfer, utility bill payment, mobile phone top-up, bus tickets and instant win lottery cards. The Company has developed private label pre-paid debit cards in conjunction with its banking partners.
An important operational component of the Company’s product offering is their ability to perform mobile transactions. This term encompasses both mobile payments (e.g. settlement of bills) and mobile transfers (e.g. person-to-person money transfers). Mobile transactions extend access of financial services to those in developing countries that do not have bank accounts. The service facilitates cash deposit and withdrawal services and will enable financially excluded groups to gain access to the banking services ladder. Once on the ladder, they will be encouraged and economically rewarded for climbing the ladder.
The Company plans to shortly launch KCash, a fully functional person-to-person payments application in conjunction with a number of banks in Kenya. The Directors are positioning KCash as a new and innovative bank services solution that makes use of mobile technology, rather than a mobile network solution for the unbanked. The new KCash merchant will provide services that fall somewhere between a traditional bank branch and an ATM.
In the case of credit, debit and charge cards the terminal links to the processing engine which in turn links to the acquiring bank and from there to the merchant’s own bank account. In the case of prepaid mobile phone top-up, bill payment, money transfer or ticket issuing, the terminal links to the processing engine which hosts the various applications. Interested parties such as banks, mobile operators, bus companies and even the consumer can inspect their transactions online in a totally secure environment.
The Company’s key product offering to its banks and other partners comprises a full and seamless back-end transaction processing engine that links an acquiring bank to the merchant’s own bank account. This consists of:
- Merchant multi-applications
- The mobile payment terminal
- Back-end transaction processing and routing engines
- Sophisticated Web based online reporting and analysis system
- Highly experienced support and implementation team
